What to Wear for Newborn Photos: Why Neutrals are a Beautiful Choice

Wondering what to wear for your newborn portrait session? My simplest advice is to start with neutrals.

When preparing for a newborn photography session, choosing what everyone will wear can sometimes feel like one more thing to figure out during an already busy season of life. But it doesn’t have to be complicated.

In my studio, I love soft, neutral tones for newborn sessions because they create images that feel calm, timeless and focused on what matters most — your baby and the connection between you.
Here are a few reasons neutral colours are a beautiful choice for your in-studio newborn photography session:

Neutrals Keep the Focus on Baby.
Soft creams, whites, taupes, warm beiges, and gentle greys create a calm backdrop without competing for attention.

They’re timeless.
Newborn photographs are meant to be treasured for years. Trends come and go, but simple, neutral clothing will still feel beautiful when you look back at these images years from now.

Neutral tones work especially well with soft natural light and the warm, understated feel I love creating in newborn sessions. They make the whole gallery feel cohesive.
When everyone is dressed in complementary, neutral tones - the images naturally flow together without looking overly coordinated.

You Don’t Have to Match
One of my favourite things about neutral clothing is that everyone doesn’t need to wear the exact same colour. In fact, I usually prefer a little variation. Combine soft creams, oatmeal, beige and warm grey. You can still have personality without introducing a lot of competing colour or patterns. Think complementary shades and textures rather than matching outfits. Mom might wear a soft cream dress, Dad might wear beige or a warm grey, and siblings can wear coordinating neutrals. You can also add interest through texture, and layers. Linen, cotton, knits, and denim can give your photographs dimension while keeping the overall look simple. Neutral doesn’t mean boring.

And if you love colour — you certainly don’t have to eliminate it completely. A subtle muted colour can be beautiful when it complements the rest of the wardrobe and doesn’t overpower the images.

This might be the most important advice of all:
Choose something you feel comfortable and beautiful in. Your newborn photography session isn'’t about creating the perfect outfit. It’s about documenting this fleeting season of your family’s life and your connection together.

Ultimately your family’s outfits are just part of the setting. My goal is to create images that feel like you, while keeping the focus on the tiny person you’re there to celebrate.

So - if you’re wondering what to wear for your newborn photography session my easiest answer is: When in doubt, choose neutrals.
